Thunderstorms bring chaos; Lightning kills teenager, cuts off power to thousands.(Main)

Powerful thunderstorms raked through the Capital Region late this afternoon, killing a teenage boy in Waterford, plunging at least 36,000 homes and businesses into darkness, flooding streets and strafing Albany International Airport with lightning.

Brandon Jones, 17, was standing next to a pylon at Alcathy's Marina when lightning struck, Waterford police said. They were not sure whether the lightning hit the teen or the area next to him. He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Troy, but never regained consciousness.

Police did not release his address Wednesday night.

The storm knocked out National Grid substations in West Albany, North Troy and Gloversville as it moved through the region, utility spokesman Bruce Levy said. Hardest hit were Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer and Fulton counties, he said.
