Swiss to make Polanski announcement Monday

Switzerland will make an announcement Monday about the extradition of Roman Polanski to the United States for sentencing on a charge of unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl, the government said.

Justice Ministry spokesman Guido Balmer declined to confirm that a decision had been made, or what it might be.

The government said only that Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf will hold a news conference in the capital, Bern, at 2 p.m. (1200 GMT; 8 a.m. EDT) "on the matter of the Roman Polanski extradition decision."

Lawyers representing Polanski declined to comment before the Swiss announcement.

Open-and-shut case vs. secrecy

But too often, records are hidden away for spurious reasons — to render judges' or lawyers' divorce records private, for example, while the proceedings of ordinary people remain public.

A legal effort under way to keep secret the testimony of Cook County Commissioner Jeffrey R. Tobolski in a lawsuit involving alleged hiring improprieties strikes us as being in the second category. The judge should refuse to play along.

SHANNON, Ireland - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Sunday the United States' poor relationship with Syria is overstated and indicated an openness to working with Damascus to resolve the crisis in the Middle East.

En route to the region, Rice noted that the United States still has a diplomatic mission and State Department officials working in the Syrian capital. That presence, she said, is a "channel for dealing with Syria."

"The problem isn't that people haven't talked to the Syrians. It's that the Syrians haven't acted," she said. "I think this is simply just a kind of false hobby horse that somehow it's because we don't talk to the Syrians.
