QLD:Bligh water plans 'contemptuous' - mayors

Southeast Queensland mayors have accused Premier ANNA BLIGH of treating them with contempt
over her plan to wind back the clock on water supply arrangements.

Ms BLIGH last week announced she would repeal legislation to allow councils to opt
out of three new council-owned water utilities that had proposed massive price hikes.

The surprise move followed a long-running and bitter blame game over whether the Bligh
government or councils were to blame for ratepayers' spiralling water bills.

Council of southeast Queensland Mayors acting chairman JOHN BRENT says he's written
to the premier on behalf of the southeast mayors seeking an urgent audience on the issue.

He says they urgently want to know more detail about the announcement .. saying they
want to know .. among other things .. if the government has modelled the impact of capping
charges on the financial stability of councils and the water entitlements.

FED: Tax cuts better than 'one-off sugar hit': Turnbull

CANBERRA, Dec 8 AAP - Tax cuts rather than a "one-off sugar hit" would have a greater
impact on the economy, federal Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull says.

The government started to roll out $8.7 billion worth of one-off payments to pensioners,
carers and low-income families on Monday in an attempt to stimulate an economy struck
by the global financial crisis.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has urged people to spend the money in the run-up to Christmas.

Mr Turnbull said any impact will be temporary, adding that while a similar program
in the United States in the middle of the year saw household incomes spike, expenditure
didn't go up by anything like the same amount.

"In a climate like this people are very much inclined to save one-off payments like
this," Mr Turnbull told the Fairfax Radio Network.

He said everyone should assess their own circumstances and deal with the funds as wisely
and prudently as they can.

"This is an economic equivalent of a one-off sugar hit," he said.

"If you want a more effective fiscal stimulus, tax cuts, across the board tax cuts,
particularly targeted at lower and middle-income earners, are going to have a greater
impact.

"People will see them as being permanent, they'll seem them as encouraging work, to
invest, to hire people and so forth."

QLD: Family complains about airport treatment of elderly woman

By Jessica Marszalek

BRISBANE, Aug 4 AAP - Brisbane Airport has been asked to explain why it made an 86-year-old
woman stand while her wheelchair, walking stick and shoes were searched by security officers.

John Tscheppera said his 86-year-old mother-in-law was selected for a random scan as
she went through security before a flight to Cairns with her two daughters last Thursday.

He said she was made to get out of her wheelchair and take her shoes off while her
wheelchair, shoes and wooden walking stick were swept with a security wand.

"My mother-in-law is 86, she's most of the time wheelchair-bound," he said.

"She's frail, bent over and anyone with half a brain could look at her close up and
see that she's old, frail and needs nurture, a lot of TLC.

"To subject an 86-year-old to something like that is a bit over the top."

Mr Tscheppera said the family wanted an explanation as to why such a thorough search
was carried out.

He said he understood the need for airport safety but it should have been obvious his
mother-in-law posed no threat.

Comment was being sought from Brisbane Airport.

VIC: MCG cricket evictees to be fined in future, police warn

MELBOURNE, Feb 11 AAP - Victorian police are cracking down on unruly cricket patrons,
threatening to issue fines to all fans they evict from the MCG.

The action follows the eviction of 189 people, including a lone woman, from the ground
during last night's one-day tri-series cricket match between Australia and India, because
of poor behaviour.

Sixteen of the evictees have been charged, and several more will be charged on summons
with a range of offences including drunkenness.

A crowd of 49,329 watched the match.

Superintendent John Cooke, in charge of security at the ground, said while police were
generally happy with the crowd some people were not getting the message.

"To ensure the enjoyment and safety of all we will take action against those who spoil
the experience for everyone," he said in a statement.

"In the past we have just evicted patrons but now we will issue penalty notices for
unruly behaviour and further prosecute through the courts if necessary."

The prime minister's shifted his line .. on whether local communities should have a
say in whether a nuclear reactor is built in their area.

JOHN HOWARD told parliament last week commercial investors .. not governments .. would
decide where any reactors are built.

But after Deputy PM MARK VAILE promised binding votes for communities about potential
reactors .. Mr HOWARD has agreed.

Speaking at Penrith in Sydney's west .. the PM says the nuclear question is at least
a decade away.

He says he believes in that time .. public opinion will have shifted and people will
see nuclear power as a very sensible alternative.

And Treasurer PETER COSTELLO agrees .. telling ABC Radio it should be done with the

Fed: Indoor Australians at risk of bone disease

Australia may have a reputation as a nation of sun-worshippers .. but doctors say many
older people are at risk of bone disease because they don't spend enough time in the sun.

Sunlight causes the body to manufacture vitamin D .. which is needed to increase calcium
absorption and ensure healthy bones.

But elderly people who are housebound .. live in residential facilities .. or spend
most of their time indoors .. are at risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Dr PETER ROUSH of the National Prescribing Service .. says this deficiency can lead
to osteoporosis .. a condition in which bones become thinner and weaker .. and can fracture
more easily.

The social network

Chicagoans are using a locally created website to build neighborhood connections and activities, reinventing the days when neighbors borrowed sugar or talked on the front porch.

Joe Jablonski, a software entrepreneur, used the site, OhSoWe.com, to borrow a saw strong enough to cut through railroad ties so he could get rid of planter boxes at his house.

"The planter boxes are rotten, so I went online to find a way to cut through them," he said.

Mandy Pekin turned to OhSoWe to organize her Lake View neighborhood to clean up the yard of a vacant house and to pick up 107 pounds of trash on the street.

"In the past six months, our block has used OhSoWe to spread the word about initiatives that affect us beyond neighborhood basics like safety alerts and block-party planning," said Pekin, who has lived in her home for five years. "It has helped us create conversations about truly building a sense of community on our block."

The site can also be used to share tools and skills, and post 'needs' and announcements such as a garage sale or a single person's needing help to move a dresser.

The site is the brainchild of Chuck Templeton, who founded online restaurant-reservation site OpenTable and serves as chairman of the board of restaurant-delivery site GrubHub.com.

Templeton launched the beta version of OhSoWe on his own block — the 1700 block of Fletcher, one block south of Belmont — because he believes so strongly in strengthening community bonds.

"The concept is about making neighborhoods more resilient and self-reliant," he said. "I don't know many of my neighbors. I felt that the Internet's capabilities could accelerate people communicating and sharing resources."

One of the goals is saving money or, in socially conscious jargon, promoting collaborative consumption in the mode of Zipcar and Netflix.

When neighbors lend one another a rake or folding chairs, or rent out a power drill, they save money and start talking, Templeton said.

"People can look at skills the same way — house-sitting, dog walking or help moving a clothes dryer," he said.

Templeton used the website to borrow a sledgehammer so he could remove a tree stump from his back yard.

Another benefit of the Internet is that people keep one another in line by posting alerts about bad behavior and rulebreaking, and praise their neighbors for being stand-up, reliable people, he said.

Other websites are sprouting in Chicago to help people find services that they can trust. These include:

†Kumbuya.com, where people post their own deals and seek specific discounts, products or services at the cost they prefer;

†OpenChime.com, which lets people get unlisted prices and custom quotes for services they are seeking;

†NextAdvisor.com, which ranks services ranging from online diet programs to tax-preparation companies to credit-monitoring services.

The community-building trend is extending to upstart businesses such as Chicago-based mobile-game developer Bravado Waffle.

The three-man startup is using crowd-funding site Kickstarter to raise money for its planned strategy game, RoboArena.

"We were inspired by the Robo Rally board game of 15 years ago and other classic computer games," said Stephen Dick, CEO and game designer. "We want to make games that are fun, educational, challenging and family-friendly."

RoboArena players program teams of robots to outwit their opponents in a game without the blood, gore and shock value so common in games today.

Such communal efforts illustrate a trend in which people turn to social-media platforms to strengthen their friendships and build geographically connected networks, said Stacy DeBroff, CEO of Boston-based Mom Central Consulting.

Forty percent of mothers surveyed in the consulting firm's research say they lack a friend with whom they can share everything, and 61 percent want to make new friends.

"Let's say I have a child diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. I want to find a nurturing community so I can get advice and obsess about details that other people don't care about," DeBroff said.

"People can break down these barriers online and learn how they can bring value to others in ways they never knew."

The net loss attributable to common was $0.06 per share, compared to earnings per share of $0.03 in the prior year period. EDS: EDS unveils plans to simplify business approach an and stimulate growth.

M2 PRESSWIRE-10 September 1999-EDS: EDS unveils plans to simplify business approach and stimulate growth (C)1994-99 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

RDATE:090999

* Company Will Deliver Solutions Globally with Increased Focus on Electronic Business

PLANO, Texas -- EDS announced today it will fundamentally alter the way it does business to meet the demands of the new digital economy by focusing on four global lines of business. Those lines of business, aimed at driving growth for EDS and improving performance for its clients, include: A. T. Kearney; E.solutions; Business Process Management; and Information Solutions.

"We are making these changes to ignite our growth engines and to reclaim leadership in the industry we founded," said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dick Brown. "EDS is uniquely positioned to offer its clients unsurpassed end-to-end capabilities and experience in implementing solutions and services on a global basis. We need to bring those core strengths to our clients and build our future foundation on the highest possible levels of client satisfaction."

The company said the changes it is making will simplify EDS' face to the market; give EDS a clear client focus; create four fully integrated, global businesses; elevate global industry expertise, and enhance career growth and development opportunities. These objectives will be met through collaboration among these lines of business:

* E.solutions: In the fast-growing, $120 billion solutions consulting market, E.solutions will offer clients expertise

in a full range of electronic business capabilities, including E.communities, Internet solutions and applications, and enterprise applications. John McCain, 40, president, will continue to lead this business line.

* Business Process Management (BPM): Clients in the burgeoning, $130-billion-plus market for Business Process Management, can look to EDS for expertise in enterprise customer management, claims processing, and settlement processing solutions. Previously part of E.solutions, BPM will become a separate business line to focus attention on the unique features that drive growth and success in that market. Kim McMann, 41, former president of EDS' State Business and of the State Health Care strategic business unit, has been named president of this line of business.

* A. T. Kearney: Already the second-largest firm in the $25 billion to $35 billion high-value consulting market, A. T. Kearney's global presence spans every major and emerging market. The firm offers strategic, operational, organizational, and information technology consulting and executive search services to the world's leading companies. Fred G. Steingraber, 61, will continue as chief executive officer of this line of business.

* Information Solutions: Already a top global player in this market, EDS offers clients expertise in managing centralized systems, distributed systems, communications, and applications development. The worldwide IT services market exceeds $110 billion annually. Douglas Frederick, 49, who joined EDS in July 1999, has been named president of this business line.

In addition to these changes, the company is establishing global industry experts who will provide a consistent, current repository of global industry knowledge across all four lines of business. Collaboration among the industry and line-of-business teams is aimed at dramatically improving EDS' ability to deliver world-class value propositions to its clients based on the full breadth of EDS' capabilities.

The focus on client service is the number one priority. Each client will have a single EDS executive responsible for the overall relationship and services EDS provides that client worldwide. "The Client Executive is the most important of the newly created positions," Brown said. "This person will be accountable for ensuring our clients receive the best possible service, globally and across all four lines of business, and is totally committed to client satisfaction."

The changes at EDS are currently being communicated to employees and clients around the world and will be implemented beginning Oct. 1. Brown added, "Superior client satisfaction is at the heart of any great company's success and has always been a core value at EDS. The changes we're making mark a stronger and more consistent focus across our company on driving growth and improved performance for clients around the globe. Their satisfaction and success are the keys to EDS' future growth and vitality in the booming IT services market."

EDS, a leader in the global information technology services industry for more than 35 years, delivers management consulting, electronic business solutions, and systems and technology expertise to improve the performance of more than 9,000 business and government clients in about 50 countries. EDS reported revenues of $16.9 billion in 1998. The company's stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:EDS) and the London Stock Exchange. Daniel hurt filming Bond action scene.

Provided by 7DAYS.ae

Daniel Craig, star of the upcoming James Bond movie 'Quantum of Solace', suffered a hand injury requiring medical attention while shooting the film this week, a Columbia Pictures spokesman has confirmed.

But the spokesman, Steve Elzer, said he was unable to comment on news reports in Britain that Craig, 40, had sliced off a fingertip in the accident, which reportedly occurred while he was filming an action sequence at London's Pinewood Studios. Elzer downplayed the severity of the mishap. "There was a minor incident on the set, and Daniel injured his hand, and in any situation like that it's usual procedure to seek medical attention. He did. He was back on the set within a matter of hours, and production wasn't delayed," Elzer said.

The accident marked the latest in a string of mishaps during production of the 22nd installment of the James Bond film franchise. Last week, Craig was reported to have suffered a laceration to his face that required eight stitches, although Elzer said he had no information about that incident.

Producers of the film said in April that a stuntman was hospitalised with serious injuries suffered in an accident behind the wheel of an Alfa Romeo sports car in northern Italy. Days before, British media reported that another car to be used in the production, an Aston Martin DBS, skidded off the road into a lake, but the driver escaped with minor injuries.
