Redoubt Volcano erupted Monday with no warning, shooting an ash plume at least 30,000 feet into the air that was visible 110 miles away in Anchorage, a scientist said.
Dan Miller of the Alaska Volcano Observatory said, "We're having an eruption right now. It looks like a major one.
"It does contain a lot of ash. It didn't give any immediate warning."
State environmental officials continue to work on insuring the safety of crude oil stored at the Drift River oil facility some 20 miles from the volcano.
