Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood will be sidelined until at leastSept. 1 because of tendinitis in his right shoulder, the team said onits Web site. Wood, the 1998 National League Rookie of the Year,hasn't pitched since Aug. 3 because of soreness in his shoulder. Heunderwent an MRI exam on Monday that showed no structural damage, butwill remain on the disabled list to work on strengthening his ailingshoulder. "We just give it a chance to really get strong andcontinue to do his workout exercises," manager Don Baylor said. Wood, who underwent reconstructive surgery on his right elbow in1999, has a 10-6 record with a 3.50 earned run average in 23 startsthis season. Since he went on the disabled list Aug. 4, the Cubshave a 6-10 record, falling out of first place in the National LeagueCentral Division. They are two games behind the first-place HoustonAstros in the NL Central and one game behind the San Francisco Giantsin the NL wild-card race. Joe Borowski and Carlos Zambrano, who werecalled up from the minor leagues to fill in for Wood in the startingrotation, have allowed 13 runs in 5 1/3 innings. "It's been a rollercoaster ever since his departure from the rotation," Baylor said."It's been a juggling act trying to insert someone into that spot." Juan Cruz, a 20-year-old right-hander, was called up from the Cubs'Double-A affiliate to make his major-league debut in tonight's gameagainst the Milwaukee Brewers. The regular season ends Sept. 30.
