Energy companies push stocks slightly higher

NEW YORK (AP) — Rising prices for oil and other commodities prices pushed stocks up slightly in early afternoon trading Wednesday, but mixed earnings reports from retailers tempered the gains. The Dow Jones industrial average is still down 2.3 percent for the month.

The Dow rose 32 points, or 0.3 percent, to 12,512. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 7 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,335.

Oil prices rose 4 percent to $100 a barrel because of a weaker dollar and after a Dept. of Energy report said inventories of crude oil did not rise last week as expected. Energy stocks in the S&P 500 rose nearly 2 percent, the most of the 10 industry groups in the index.
