EU free trees for young Europeans

The European Commission says it will give 5,000 young Europeans trees to plant before the global climate change talks in Copenhagen in December.

It says anyone aged 15 to 29 and living in 10 EU states taking part can log onto a Web site and ask for a free sapling of a pink-fruit bearing spindle tree.

People can take pictures of tree they plant and post them on a Europe-wide map on the site.

The EU said Monday that planting trees can help combat climate change because they absorb carbon dioxide, a heat-trapping gas that is contributing to global warming.

The program runs in Bulgaria, Britain, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, France, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden.
