Fed: Howard changes tune on votes on nuclear reactors

The prime minister's shifted his line .. on whether local communities should have a
say in whether a nuclear reactor is built in their area.

JOHN HOWARD told parliament last week commercial investors .. not governments .. would
decide where any reactors are built.

But after Deputy PM MARK VAILE promised binding votes for communities about potential
reactors .. Mr HOWARD has agreed.

Speaking at Penrith in Sydney's west .. the PM says the nuclear question is at least
a decade away.

He says he believes in that time .. public opinion will have shifted and people will
see nuclear power as a very sensible alternative.

And Treasurer PETER COSTELLO agrees .. telling ABC Radio it should be done with the
full consultation of the local community.
